Exercise physiology and group fitness

Lymphoedema is a condition that can cause significant swelling of the arm or leg due to the build up of fluid. This can occur when the lymphatic system, which is responsible for draining excess fluid, is damaged as a result of cancer treatment.

A pre-surgical assessment can help to prevent lymphoedema by assessing the risk, learning about any early warning signs and prescribing appropriate exercises as well as assessing the requirement of a compression garment.

Undergoing lymphoedema therapy is a recommended way of monitoring and controlling symptoms to maintain results of lymphoedema treatment as well as reducing the swelling and preventing the condition from worsening.

Seeing a lymphoedema specialist is the best way of allowing for early intervention and the opportunity to act when lymphoedema is still at a reversible stage.
